Ambitus

Your notes are your files

Every app I left taught me the same lesson: leaving is the hard part.

Years of notes sitting somewhere on a server, and the way out was an export button that gave me half of them. Formatting gone. Photos somewhere else. Or no export at all, just an account I had to keep paying for to read my own writing.

So I made one rule for Ambitus: your things are yours.

Notes and lists are ordinary files, in ordinary folders, in your own iCloud Drive or on your device. You can see them in the Finder or the Files app, copy them, and back them up like anything else.

There is no Ambitus account. No sign-up, no login, no server of mine sitting between you and your notes. Ambitus doesn't collect anything about you or how you use it. iCloud, which you already have, keeps your devices in step. Tasks and events stay where they already are, in Apple's Reminders and Calendar. Ambitus shows them and lets you change them; it doesn't copy them into a world of its own. If you stop using Ambitus tomorrow, your calendar won't even notice.

And when you want something out, a note or a whole folder of them exports as Word, PDF, RTF or text, a table as CSV, a photo as its original.

I'd rather you stay because the app is good, not because leaving is hard.

What couldn't you take with you when you left your last app?
